BCSCP Mission Statement

The mission of the BC Society of Clinical Perfusion is to encourage and foster the development of the profession of Clinical Cardiovascular Perfusion through education and professional representation, so as to provide optimum patient care.

What is Cardiovascular Perfusion?

Cardiovascular Perfusion is the process of using Cardiopulmonary Bypass (a heart-lung machine) during heart surgery to replace the normal functions of the heart and lungs, allowing these organs to be stopped so that the Cardiac Surgeon may complete surgery under still conditions.

A perfusionist, also referred to as a clinical perfusionist, is a highly trained medical professional who primarily operates the heart-lung machine during cardiac surgery or procedures requiring cardiopulmonary support.
